The Sloan Award
Presented by the UNA-NI for International Work
This award is presented to the P7 pupil who has shown interest, enthusiasm and / or commitment in the area of ‘International Work’ within Botanic Primary School. It is presented by the United Nations Association (NI) in memory of an interested and active member who was also proud to be Chair of the Board of Governors of Botanic Primary – a school renowned for its multi-cultural ethos.
Mrs Hilary A Sloan MBE MA HDipEd
Mrs Sloan was an English teacher who had worked in India, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. She also taught for 12 years in the Northern Ireland Prison Service. Mrs Sloan, a fluent Irish speaker had been involved in Adult Literacy for over 30 years and co-ordinated the National Year of Reading for Northern Ireland in 1998. Until she retired in 2005 she was a lecturer in Communication Studies at Queen’s University Belfast. Mrs Sloan was a past member of the Belfast Education and Library Board where she chaired both the Library Committee and Education (Schools) Committee and was also a past President of the ANIELB. Until her untimely death in June 2016, she was the chairperson of the Board of Governors of Botanic Primary School since 2010 and a member of the Board of Governors of Ashfield Girls’ High School. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2007 she was awarded the MBE for services to education in Northern Ireland. She will be greatly missed by us all.
